Hey! My name is Ivey and I am the face behind Grand Slam Service Dogs! I formed GSSD in 2023 after renaming and rebranding my business from former "Grand Slam Canine Training". GSSD began as an all-around pet and service dog program where I helped pets and service animals. I found myself getting burnt out with pet training and therefore we became Grand Slam Service Dogs, focusing on only service dogs.
My background in dog training is pretty heavy, as I have been in the dog community since 2016. My very first job working with dogs was a Petco Positive trainer. During my time at Petco I was introduced to the positive reinforcement community and how to really train dogs. Petco limited my skills a lot, and therefore I sought out better opportunities. I then landed an internship with a trainer in upstate NY! This position was challenging. The trainer who I was working under was a balanced trainer and worked heavily alongside the local Police Department as well as the Army. During this time, I also worked for Guiding Eyes for the Blind and got to work with guide dog puppies and dogs in training! Once I moved back to Georgia, I began working with another service dog organization but ultimately decided I wanted to do this on my own.
In the first half of my career, I was heavily involved in continuing education for my training career. I completed my IAABC-ADT certification over 500 hours of CEU's, AKC evaluator, and attended a few seminars. In the spring of 2024, I decided not to renew my certification with IAABC as I wanted to focus more on Force Free training and be certified in techniques that more align with my views. I do plan on attending the Dog Trainer Comprehensive course by Karon Pryor this summer and work my way up.
I live in West, GA with my husband John, our 3 dogs, and 2 other small critters! Balto is my husky mix who I rescued in 2016. He is the foundation for all I have done, and he made me the handler I am today. A few years later I introduced Nova my German Shepherd mix into my life! Nova was yet again, another rescue. She has challenged my in more ways than I can count. Nova got me into dog sports, and the online dog community. In 2023 I brought home a labrador puppy named Ozzie! Ozzie is my first purebred dog and is also my service dog. Ozzie helps by mitigating a few different disabilities, but his main job is glucose alerts and autism tasks. Ozzie is also my sport dog, and we compete in Dock Diving, Fast Cat, and Barn Hunt.
I do have another job; I am a Certified Pharmacy Tech, and I absolutely love my job! My husband and I plan on moving to Alabama in a year to begin our farm life. I can't wait to take you on our adventure!
Grand Slam Service Dogs follows a positive reinforcement/force free training approach. We will NO LONGER offer guidance or training on dogs wearing tools.
All dogs in our training school are required to work their dogs with our methods. This includes no e-collars, prongs, or chains.
If our views don’t align with yours, we will be happy to refer you to another trainer.
Positive reinforcement dog training is a method that focuses on rewarding desirable behaviors to encourage them to be repeated. Instead of punishing unwanted behaviors, this technique emphasizes using rewards like treats, praise, or toys when the dog exhibits the behavior you want. The idea is to make the behavior more likely to occur again by associating it with something positive.
For example, if you want your dog to sit on command, you would reward them with a treat or verbal praise immediately after they sit. Over time, the dog learns that sitting leads to rewards, and they’re more likely to sit when asked.
The benefits of positive reinforcement include:
In short, positive reinforcement creates a more enjoyable and effective training experience by rewarding the behaviors you want, rather than punishing unwanted ones.
